Legal Secretary

Overview: A Legal Secretary works in a law office and handles both traditional secretarial tasks and as well as tasks specific to the legal field. On an average day, a Legal Secretary's tasks will range from answering phones and sending emails to preparing subpoenas, motions, and other legal documents.


  • Managing and storing files in a manner that minimizes clutter while allowing for easy access when needed
  • Communicating effectively and professionally with clients, lawyers, and other law firms orally or in writing
  • Handling sensitive documents and complying with relevant privacy laws when creating documents or sharing information
  • Ensuring that all legal filings are filed correctly with the courts and that nothing has been overlooked
  • Using Microsoft Office platforms such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint 
  • Complete administrative duties such as making copies, answering and directing phone calls, and greeting clients
  • Coordinate appointments, including all correspondence and logistics necessary
  • Implement and improve upon administrative processes for more efficient workflow
  • Managing firm website, social media, and client intake

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two-year degree or equivalent certification, or
  • 2+ years working experience as a legal assistant
  • Experience in civil or criminal litigation and knowledge of litigation procedure preferred
  • Familiarity with MS Office
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to take direction and work independently with little or no supervision
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Familiarity with a legal CRM tool, preferably Clio
