Being involved in an accident where you or others are severely injured can be a traumatic experience. The first step after any accident is to seek medical attention immediately. If you are unable to get medical attention on your own, contact a family member, close friend, or dial 911 for immediate assistance. If you are involved in an automobile accident, pull off to the side of the road to avoid any further collision. Set up cones and/or road flares if possible to warn drivers of the accident. This will also help first responders locate you so that they can get you to safety.
While your health and well-being are your primary concern, there are several steps that you can take after an accident to make sure that you receive the appropriate compensation for your injuries. You should call the police so that the incident is documented and a formal report is generated. The contents of this report will contain valuable information about the incident itself and are important evidence to have available for your attorney to review. The police report is also a valuable piece of evidence that may be used at trial together with the testimony of the responding officer(s).
You also want to document the incident as best you can on your own. This includes taking time-stamped photographs of the location where the incident/accident occurred, time-stamped photographs of your injuries, and even creating a drawing of the accident location. If you have been involved in an auto accident, you want to gather all of the information that you can from the other driver involved (name, license, license plate number, registration, insurance information, etc.).
The next thing that you should do is speak to an attorney. Be sure to provide him/her with all of the information that you have gathered regarding the accident and your injuries. Your attorney will be able to assess your case and determine the appropriate next steps.
